As a whimsical and enigmatic visitor, the performance artist Martin Zimmermann physically explores the theme of balance in his own unique way on three consecutive days in the context of the exhibition Alexander Calder & Fischli/Weiss at the Fondation Beyeler. Before the eyes of the other visitors, he produces a silent film and performance set to live music by the jazz pianist Colin Vallon.
Surrealism collides with the real, freedom with convention, history with the present; Martin Zimmermann takes the moment of fragile balance, a focus of the current exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler, as an opportunity to offer his own interpretation of that fleeting state between sublime equilibrium and lustful failure. Zimmermann confounds the familiar, questions general principles, reveals the invisible, makes the improbable appear real and encourages viewers to experience new perspectives and ways of thinking.
